well…i made it!!

Due to the time of year that I’m beginning this blog and with what is currently going on in my life, it seems it only makes sense for my first blog post to be about my upcoming GRADUATION from undergrad. I will graduate Cum Laude on May 12, 2012 from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education. It’s been a long time coming, but I MADE IT!!  I can honestly say, it really feels like yesterday, I was packing up and leaving for my first year in college and now it’s all over...well, undergrad is, anyway, but this DEFINITELY isn’t the end of schooling for me. My long-term goal is to obtain a Ph. D. in Composition and with that degree, become a composer (in addition to a college professor) and write music. In between now and then, by the grace of GOD, I will be teaching at Darlington Middle School for 3-5 years then obtaining a Master’s Degree in Music Theory. The school for this degree is yet undetermined, but after attending an HBCU, it has really set in how much I LOVE my institution. For that reason, I am considering attending another which would be Tuskegee University, located in AL.

Graduating really is a bittersweet time for me. I’m happy to be graduating with honors and to already have a job lined up, but sad to be leaving friends, who I have grown so close to, that they feel like family and also nervous, yet excited for my first year of teaching ….*Kevin Hart voice*, BY MYSELF!! Lol I know on the day of graduation i know I’ll be a complete bucket of water, but it’s ok, cuz if you only knew the journey I’ve traveled since freshman year to now, you’d understand. However, I’m sure college is a tedious journey for everyone.

In the beginning, it starts with academics as well as having a social life, for MOST ppl. For me, it wasn’t quite the same. Yep, im a geek. I started school with academics being my top and only priority.  And I don’t apologize for it. I know that it was my work-a-holic, career-driven mindset that has gotten me where I am today. Not to say, that I didn’t have friends or any other type of relationships because I have PLENTY, but I’ve never been much of a party-er or club-go-er . I don’t look down on anyone who chooses to do so, it’s just not my thing. My friends that have been most influential in my life are: Stephanie Jones, NeQuasia Reeves, Ammaarah Webb, and most recently, Luquita Edwards.

They have all either graduated or transferred schools, so I can at least say, it doesn’t feel like I’m “leaving” them, but I can say that I’m leaving undergrad with my head held high and no regrets…..well….except this pesky little “problem”, we’ll just call it, that I recently realized I have.

Wanna know more?? Stay tuned for my next post, “ a pesky little problem, called…..”

This is a really nice blog. The pics are amazing by the way. Actually, you've given me some ideas...LOL. Congrats on you graduating with honors!!! And having a career lined up. You're definitely a person who prioritizes and sets goals. There's no shame in that :) Can't wait to read your next entry.
