so i saw this today on fb and....
So today, like any other day, im on fb browsing thru my newsfeed and i see these prophetic words... words that i've been pondering for quite some time. Paraphrased, this person's status was mainly making the point of how ppl act so "in touch w their roots" and so "pro-black" as i call it, by growing out their perms or chopping all their hair off, but yet these same ppl will wear a straight weave on top of their "natural" hair (which i refer to as nappy because thas what it would have been called just a few years ago and i'm not in the business of sugar-coating anything...ESPECIALLY not in this blog). To me, if ur gonna be all pro-black, then u should commit to it whole-heartedly and doing this (the straight weave over nappy hair) makes u a ...*wait for it*....SELLOUT!!!
Now i do understand some ppl do this for religious reasons, as the bible speaks against body manipulations (don't ask me where, i jus know it's in there...lol) and using a perm would be chemically altering ur hair from its original state... but MOST ppl are not going "natural" for that reason...its a fad, that i hope goes out of style soon!!
Why do i feel this way, u ask??? Lol well i'll tell u...not to play the race card, but regardless of what ppl say, i think until racism ceases to exist, many societal values will always be based on the opinions of white ppl...and for this issue, it's a matter of what they see as professional...and truth be told, i personally don't see it as professional. To me, for any occasion, straight hair will always look better...i'm sure im gonna get plenty of backlash for this, mainly from "princess stephy"...lol but oh well....i warned u guys!! lol

well…i made it!!
Due to the time of year that I’m beginning this blog and
with what is currently going on in my life, it seems it only makes sense for my
first blog post to be about my upcoming GRADUATION from undergrad. I will
graduate Cum Laude on May 12, 2012 from Claflin University with a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Music Education. It’s been a long time coming, but I MADE
IT!! I can honestly say, it really feels
like yesterday, I was packing up and leaving for my first year in college and
now it’s all over...well, undergrad is, anyway, but this DEFINITELY isn’t the
end of schooling for me. My long-term goal is to obtain a Ph. D. in Composition
and with that degree, become a composer (in addition to a college professor)
and write music. In between now and then, by the grace of GOD, I will be
teaching at Darlington Middle School for 3-5 years then obtaining a Master’s
Degree in Music Theory. The school for this degree is yet undetermined, but
after attending an HBCU, it has really set in how much I LOVE my institution.
For that reason, I am considering attending another which would be Tuskegee
University, located in AL.
Graduating really is a bittersweet time for me. I’m happy
to be graduating with honors and to already have a job lined up, but sad to be
leaving friends, who I have grown so close to, that they feel like family and
also nervous, yet excited for my first year of teaching ….*Kevin Hart voice*,
BY MYSELF!! Lol I know on the day of graduation i know I’ll be a complete
bucket of water, but it’s ok, cuz if you only knew the journey I’ve traveled
since freshman year to now, you’d understand. However, I’m sure college is a
tedious journey for everyone.
In the beginning,
it starts with academics as well as having a social life, for MOST ppl. For me,
it wasn’t quite the same. Yep, im a geek. I started school with academics being
my top and only priority. And I don’t
apologize for it. I know that it was my work-a-holic, career-driven mindset
that has gotten me where I am today. Not to say, that I didn’t have friends or
any other type of relationships because I have PLENTY, but I’ve never been much
of a party-er or club-go-er . I don’t look down on anyone who chooses to do so,
it’s just not my thing. My friends that have been most influential in my life
are: Stephanie Jones, NeQuasia Reeves, Ammaarah Webb, and most recently,
Luquita Edwards.
They have all either graduated or transferred schools, so I
can at least say, it doesn’t feel like I’m “leaving” them, but I can say that
I’m leaving undergrad with my head held high and no regrets…..well….except this
pesky little “problem”, we’ll just call it, that I recently realized I have.
Wanna know more?? Stay tuned for my next post, “ a pesky
little problem, called…..”
A little bit about me, Mandy V.
Hey internet world and my future blog readers!! Welcome
to my blog, "This Is What Happens When... " My name is Amanda V. Greene. I go by “Mandy”…been called that
literally since I was a baby. A few things about me…I am a senior in college
about to graduate with honors and a degree in Music Education. Soon after, I
will be teaching at a middle school, close to home, as the band director. I’m
22. My favorite color is yellow, makes me think of happiness…lol idk y…anyways,
I’ve been contemplating this blog idea
for quite some time and for a while it was this, or twitter and I decided this
was better. I like painting my nails as well as other ppl’s nails….I’m no cosmetologist,
but hey it relaxes me.
these are stephie's toes, that i designed...you'll meet the face connected to the toes later...lol
A few of my favorite movies are: Deliver Us From Eva,
Save The Last Dance (1 and 2), Easy A, Life As We Know It, Bride Wars, and The
Back-Up Plan. Yea, I like chick flicks, and sappy love stories as you may have
guessed.
Currently, I’m planning for life after undergrad, which
entails a lot. My goal is to have moved out of my parent’s house, by Christmas.
I think if I’m able to find a summer job, I could be out before then. But anyways,
in sticking with the original plan, if I’m not able to do that, then I’ll have
to wait til, or close to xmas. Right now, Im trying to work on a realistic
budget as far as what percentage of each paycheck I could spend and still be
able to reach my goal…which would mean that although I’m saving, I’d have room
to occasionally treat myself and buy random things, if I wanted.
Other things about me…ummm im outspoken. I have grown to
be more outgoing, although it takes me being around certain ppl to showcase
that dormant aspect of my personality. One person who does that for me is
Stephanie Jones, or Princess Stephy, as she calls herself….lol I call her Steph
tho…I freakin LOVE this girl!!
She’s like the friend, I always wished I had, but never
realized it. Like, someone who cared equally as much about the friendship as I
did and worked equally as hard (ex. sacrificing) to make the friendship last and
work. What I mean is…it’s like having a boyfriend, and never realizing you were
being mistreated or that you could do better until that awesome,
out-of-this-world guy came along and
opened your eyes. Yep, she’s that awesome
of a person and friend!! She’s that friend
that actually texts you back. If she doesn’t feel like texting, she doesn’t lie
and say,” I was busy”, she just says, “I don’t feel like texting”. She speaks the
TRUTH in any and every situation, regardless of if I wanna hear it or not…lol Meet Steph J
This blog will be...kinda like, my life, in blog form....just random bits that i feel like sharing...i express my opinion quite often and i don't apologize for it.
enjoy!!
